Ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba “refused to play for Montreal Impact over selection row”
Montreal Impact head coach Mauro Biello has claimed that Didier Drogba refused to play for the club after finding out he’d be on the bench against Toronto.
Drogba, who joined Montreal Impact in the summer of 2015, has had a good spell with the Major League Soccer club having scored 21 goals in 32 league matches.
However, it seems trouble is ahead as the 38-year-old striker apparently refused to play for the club after being informed he’d be starting on the bench at the weekend.
Biello revealed afterwards that Drogba had a slight tightness in his back, but was able to play and was unhappy at the team selection, missing out on the 2-2 draw.
Biello told reporters: “He didn’t accept that he would come off the bench and, in the end, he didn’t want to be in the 18.
“There was tightness in his back, yes, but he was capable of playing. The organisation will have to handle this.”
In the current MLS campaign, Drogba has appeared 22 times for Montreal but missed a total of 10 matches as well.
He has still been fairly consistent in front of goal, though, having scored 10, which is the second-most at the club, behind only Pablo Piatti, who has 17.
