BETWEEN PARKING THE BUS AND GOOD FOOTBALL

Between parking the Bus and Beautiful football

Beauty and The Beast is an apt representation of the comparative profiles of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho. One has conquered Europe with a master class of artistry, while the other has forced his way up the ladder with trickery and shrewdness both known and unknown to man. As a football purist who believes in the culture of the round leather game that has bridged gulfs and nations even more than religion, Pep has carved a niche for himself as true disciple of the game and is now a phenomenon. We can sit back and remember in years from now there was a time the world bowed to teams that did nothing but outclass you in every department. With scintillating displays and electric skill from the finest sets of football DNAs ever witnessed, with persistence, precision and collective triangular movement never before witnessed. Creativity has bested shrewdness since the onset of mankind. It  is creativity that engineered the world's technological advancement not shrewdness, shrewdness is a backdoor means to get the job done with less quality and this only breeds short spells of glory, what we can call unsustainable pseudo tactics. You might think of Wenger as a purist who never adapted to the changes and dynamism of the modern game and the mafia approach to winning  games, but despite his short comings he has been able to keep his presence alive in the elite strata without a single outright seasonal failure.
We are waiting to see if Mourinho will surprise us at Man United with 4 trophy-ladden seasons or hide his tail between his legs and scamper after 2 seasons with or without trophies and a cantankerous end to the tale.

I understand Pep is passing through a rough patch having to work with a team  he is raising to his desired level of tactical ingenuity. Being outplayed by Barcelona is a wake up call that there is indeed more work to be done at the blue half of Manchester as the strongest gales of tsunamies are yet to blow.
But I like to believe that good football breeds good players, while shrewd tactics produce  players that hardly can think for themselves or innovate properly during complex games which are determined by  moments of truth.

Another  fan gives a different view,

These days I don't understand how people think or reason in football related matters.
Please let me ask a question, what is more important in a football game, the playing style or the result?
How can Man United earn 1 point in an away game against Liverpool, while Man City gets trashed and massacred by Barcelona with a 4-0 scoreline and you believe Pep Gurdiola should be praised all because he played a better style than Mourinho, like seriously?
If playing a better style football was a guarantee for success then why did Arsene Wenger and Arsenal go up to 9 years without a single trophy and over a decade now without the Epl trophy considering the fact that they play the best kind of football in England.
Look I prefer winning the UCL trophy with "park the bus" football the way Chelsea did in 2012 to getting eliminated in the round of 16 or quarter finals with beautiful football.
I prefer winning the EPL with "park the bus" football the way Chelsea did in 2015 under Mourinho to just making the top 4 or top 7 with beautiful football.

  3. Yes Wiezman. Away draw with liverpool is better than losing 4-0. I think its better to park the bus

  4. The important thing is to win at the end of the match, no matter how it's done

  5. Am with Blazing Queen on this who cares about wankrey football, do whatever it takes to win the game. I would park the bus all day.

  7. Personally, I'd say the 2 submission are not at the same intellectual level. The 1st one was comprehensive n sound, obviously bearing in mind that in every thing we do in life, be it sports, civil service or whatsoever. It is mandatory to put the development n well being of mankind as priority. Which is obviously the more difficult path to walk. On the other, the submission that refuted "beautiful football" was developed with an appearantly lazy ideology, it was more or less criticism of the initial submission. I'd say both the content n style of d msg is simply inappropriate. I stand against any idea that encourages the pursuit of vanity n man made ideologies (winning by any means necessary in dis case) over divine ideologies (in dis case, d positive development of sportsmen).

  8. I totally disagree with Valour Vee so in essence u saying there should be only one approach to winning a football match? Which is pass your way into the opponents net?

  9. Football is based on winning not playing pretty if you have to park the bus and achieve your aim I will take it over playing pretty and losing heavily. I agree with Idris

  14. Nope, wrong! that is why the likes of pulis', Big Sam and the likes pattern been tagged boring, essence of football was entertainment, silverware is the plus, but the business of today have turned it the other way round, hence it's winning no matter how it comes. Short cut to victory. Am inclined to go with valour, he made some cogent points

  17. @Bryte,the essence of football is scoring and winning like you said....where are the goals and wins after parking the bus and drawing the game? The Master Bus driver almost sank Chelsea last season and left United in doubt after the first few games..even loosing to Watford? why on earth is the bus parking better off? As far as I am concerned, its beautiful football for me until bus parking takes first place, sits comfortably on the league table and wins the title.

    1. @Countess they are more than one way to skin a cat, a manager should not just base his game plan on plan A, what happens when he gets stuck? Like it happened to the great Pep on Wednesday in Spain, if he had more plans in place he would have salvaged a point there.

    2. Okay,a plan B yeah? Obviously the bus parking flops too,it gets stuck sometimes. Where then is your plan B? You are yet to convince me about this bus parking thingy, its still not the best for me..

    3. Kindly provide us with stats of when the bus failed?

  18. @Habib exactly. Plan B if you can't match your opponent's attack with attack @Countess Mou only parked the bus against Liverpool the game against Watford both sides attack it didn't work out for Mou well. He learnt his lessons from that tie he won't attack much again against offensive sides. As for Pep he will lose more games if he fail to have a balance between attack and defense. He needs to learn like the special one

  19. In as much as I admire the brilliance and creativity brought to bear in competitive football ( of wch Guadiola is exceptionally outstanding no doubt), but some of us spectators and speculators fail to realise that modern football is about gambling/business/ investment. So therefore, what is important to the investor is victory/winning assured and, not the excitement you can always get from tours coz a lot of money is involved. I think, I'll stand with Blazing Queen, he's analogy of the most recent matches involving City and United is crystal clear over what a point can actually earn a club, which in essence is far better than the beauty of play.
