What we learnt in the Epl over the weekend

Man City:
A bright start sees pep's men claim 3 points easily making what seems an epl fact that the great always experience a fall seems a hoax. The bright start deemed into draws and defeats, the question is what happened? Well despite the bright start the clean sheets were missing. So the clean sheet's absence  became the cracks for teams to exploit and for every cracks there is a cause. The list topper of man city's defensive weakness is individual errors. This was exploited to the maximum, and with that man city found themselves 6 games without a win.

Liverpool:
Klopp with the philosophy of growing players pitches him the man for the job anytime, any day. Post Rodgers and suarez saw a need for stability to be established. And the rein was handed to klopp.
What distant klopp from his peers as  coach is his attention to details of movement of players and precise passing.
With the understanding of the management and the need to start from scratch for the coach. Klopp started with what was available without the need to jump in the market to spend big on players.
Established coutinho from a young talented player to the iniesta and xavi of liverpool,
He made sure each player's proficiency were maximized to full potential. This helped establish the young stars in the attack and midfield without the need to buy a world class player. Finishing 8th on the league table last season may not be a successful season but having to blow teams away with an average 2.7 goals per game and finding themselves 3rd  on the table, same point with league leaders is a good sign for good things yet to come, but the major weakness which has put a blemish on a very good seasonal start is the defensive department. We are yet to see a team ready to fight for the tittle. Liverpool defensive woes hasn't really come to full bear because attacking side of the team has been top notch, winning games despite conceding easily.
It doesn't take brilliant display to win the league, it takes both winning with ease, fighting dirty to draw, and grinding out results, what we call scrappy wins. This is where defensive duty comes handy and without it, Liverpool will be classed among the almost category.
We hope klopp fix this accident waiting to happen before it gets too late.

Arsenal:
Having suffered more than a decade drought in the epl title, the gunners are up to a fine start this season like every other season. But Wenger as an Ageing coach has come to accept some realities in his recent shift in market decisions and the readiness to spend big where he deems fit. What makes this season special for gunners is the fact that Wenger finally has a like mind in the person of pep Guardiola to contest with. He has a habit of falling short against man u and chelsea for the fact that he sees them as non purist of the game but with Pep, he has a true competition he can see deem fit to rise to the occasion. Wenger's men finding themselves point matched to city and liverpool coming second means that the tittle contenders should be wary of gunners. Pundits and analyst would say Arsenal's best chance was last season but a couple of spoilers display ensured the gunners were lost in the whirl before the summer season. But having chelsea gunning and liverpool with Tottenham, the beauty of the fight will be to take full advantage of the fact that the team spirit is high and the players are to be managed all season and hope for no injury.
He needs to establish all the types of approach available, not a single approach to every game.
Win brilliantly, fight dirty to draw or win and win scrappy if you have to. That's the requirement to win an epl tittle.

Manchester United:
When Heaton says no who dare say yes. Heaton has the world of football agape with mouths wide open and hearts dancing tongue tip. Highlight of the game was United being denied by Heaton. 37 shots without a goal is an unforgivable endeavour but when u have a barricade  technologically built to withstand bomb blast and machine gun attacks in the form of Burnley, best believe the best of odds could go wrong. Again Mata showed why he is the key to United's attacking midfield, the intelligent twinkling left footer did justice to his role as a central midfielder playing just behind a forceful forward thrusting Ibrahimovic with ingenuity in the creative aspect as required by the position. Herrera uncomfortable in the deep role, not playing shoulder to shoulder with a supportive player was forced to two tackles that cost him red. Lingard and Rashford weren't left out in the party that saw no feast. Both had chances testing the man of the match.
Keane and Flanagan did a wonderful job with the amount of blocks. Despite being outplayed they stood their ground with the whole team behind the ball and fought till the bitter end. Ibrahimovic, the man with the unluckiest outing did everything right but couldn't score. Headers, shots, overhead kicks and the list is endless. Burnley on the other hand were lucky to come out with a draw but it will be unwise not to give credit for a remarkable defensive display. Unlike Hull city against united, they were ambitious with the counter but were sniffed out by the dominant united. Pogba had a free role to thrust upward into the opponents half, he served as the extra man in the attack waiting to pounce on a long ranger as the opportunity presented itself. The sending off of Mourinho speaks volume of the weight of pressure on him at the moment. A bad loser with egocentric driven style of approach. With what happened and after the game the question we all should be asking is should there really be a space for Pogba in the midfield owing to the fact that he is never the best player in this role and he hasn't really brought anything to the fore. That should be another day's topic. For now, let's fold our arms and watch more drama from Mourinho. And pray he doesn't plunge united further to the drain of another unsuccessful season. Does he have what it takes to make top four? Yes he does, but has he discovered it? That is what we are not sure of. The big guns shot blanks but we remain positive for a turnaround.

Chelsea:
The new found form and formation has earned chelsea four straight epl victories and four clean sheets but no team so far have come close to testing the blues resolve like southampton did and here is what really transpired. Southampton playing as the host, played with more purpose and confidence of a team in search of three points. They dominated the play but spent majority of the time looking for spaces between the channels and building a triangle around Azpilicueta and Moses. These two Chelsea players were tested inside out looking for a drag out of position.                                          Chelsea's first wave of attack produced goal, And going a goal up against a hard headed team as Southampton is like biting on a tiger's tail. In response the quest to find a breaking point for Chelsea weighed strong. Redmond orchestrated series of diagonal dribbles constantly looking for weak spots to no avail. The weight of the host attack was heavy on the left which pegged Moses back to the defense, and the consistency of the Southampton players insistently doubling on Azpilicueta and Moses with both players rising to the occasion ensured that only corner kicks were the height of threat from the host. Pedro on the other hand was somewhat the freest player on the pitch. The counter attack mainly fell to his feet, but he wasn't really calling the shots to create threat for the south men, but all in all, he had a good game. Hazard assisted in the defense but was constantly winning fouls and finding comfort in having his opponents crowding him. Luiz and the men in the middle kept the host in check, while Costa made himself useful by keeping the Southampton defense busy with uncompleted dribbles and scoring from a half chance to seal the blues win.
A few flashes of brilliance from Moses and Pedro demonstrated to the opponent Chelsea's willingness not to sit back and defend  two goals up. All in all, Southampton had a thwarted attacking plan but lacked the precision to break the resilience of Conte's men. The blues edge closer with a point behind league leaders man city who also shares the same point with arsenal and Liverpool. Chelsea will hope to continue with this fine form while Southampton will look forward to a win just to wash the disappointment from a game dey deserve something out of.

Great Competition at the top, though I feel Chelsea and Liverpool have a slight edge because no European football to worry about. So players can have enough rest

  3. United won't make top 4 if they dont find scorers soon Zlatan is the only source now and he is off form. Liverpool, Arsenal, ManCity will mke top 4 if any should miss out then it will be Liverpool.. ManCity and Arsenal for the league

    1. It's good thing that Scweni has been recalled to the first team by Mou, his leadership qualities maybe needed in the dressing room. As for Zlatan he needs to start scoring goals, Mou would need to try something different maybe play two CF up front, then use Scheniderlin along side Carrick to protect Pobga and the back four.

    1. So far they have been solid and the won the big games away from home and only stuttered against Burnley. They are not playing CL as well gives them that extra something and spark to be ready.

  6. Nice write up; captures the integral points of the weekend now gone. I think the biggest winners were chelsea with the cleansheet and impeccable victory; sigh of relief for Guardiola's city and United played an almost game. Things may change yet in a month's time even. Fingers crossed.

    1. I am not putting my money on any team but any team that fixes its weaknesses before the end of first week of transfer window or before the transfer window itself amongst the first 6 teams during december period will surely have an edge. Chelsea looks promising but beware of the wear and tear that comes with high level of ultra defensive concentration. Arsenal looks most promising as long as there are no crucial injuries. Spurs might tire out once the defeats sets in. Man city and liverpool are the most likely if only the clean sheets surfaces.everton and southampton might steal the show. But I will pitch my tent with the gunners.

    2. Ok thats nice but u didnt mention Manchester United what do u think Mourinho can do to turn things around?

      Delete
    3. What can Mou do to turn things around? Well first thing first from my personal view I think he needs to put all the pplayers on the same scale of judgement. No superstar no big player. Match day should be for dedicated players in training. He has to define a cause and find a way for the players to believe they are ready to die for the club not players who feel their presence is doing the club a favour. Players like pogba and ibra should fight for their spot not have a gurantee first team sport. The automatic first team sport put players like martial rooney Carrick and a host of others feel less of themselves in ability. And for what its worth mou needs to start trusting his players and try finding an understanding of their proficiencies and be flexible with ideas not. I believe the hype around the transfer market was a big step in the wrong direction. Not finding the need to access the team before opting for the big guns the market could offer. But finding the bigbguns shooting blanks wasn't part of the plan but we might be witnessing a the passing of Jose's reign. But I believe if united could repeat the dominance and strength against burnley for 3 to 5 games consecutively with a win, top four will not be a towering distance to climb and remain firm on

  15. @Yakub I agree with the part of Mou using players that are in form and not just automatic team selection based on reputation. N

  16. Well said Mr Yakubu, but I don't get the part you talked about giving automatic spots to the likes of Rooney, Martial and Carrick. Please elucidate more on that, cos I don't think anyone should have automatic spot
